Watermelon Agua Fresca

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Agua fresca is a light non-alcoholic beverage popular in Mexico, Central America and parts of the Caribbean. They are made by blending fruit, flowers or seeds with water and sugar to create a refreshing and cool drink. Agua fresca makes a perfect alternative to the usual summer iced tea and lemonade.

When making Watermelon Agua fresca be sure to start off with a sweet, ripe watermelon. If your watermelon is sweet enough you can do without a sweetener altogether.

Ingredients

4 cups diced, watermelon with rind removed

2 1/4 cups cold water

3 tbsp lime juice

Sugar or other sweetener to taste (optional)

Preparation

Puree watermelon along with the other ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Pour into a pitcher (optionally you can pour through a strainer to remove most of the pulp) and refrigerate for 30 mins.

Garnish with sliced lemons or limes.

 Yields: Four servings.
