You don’t have to eat bland boring food to eat healthy and this Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet is proof enough of that! It’s a simple but delicious combination of healthy ingredients that will fuel your family and have them asking you to make it again.

Try these skillet meal variations:

Use ground chicken, extra lean ground beef, fresh turkey,  or hot Italian sausage.

Swap out the sweet potatoes for yukon gold and add some sweet bell peppers. Try adding different veggies; halved grape tomatoes, spinach, brussel sprouts or corn would make great additions to the base recipe.

Use different types of cheese; cheddar, gouda, Monterey Jack and swiss would all work great among others.

Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet

Yields:  6 Servings  | Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

3 small or 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced (about 3 cups)
1 pound ground turkey
1 yellow bell pepper
1 cup onion, diced
½ cup mozzarella, shredded
½ cup water
¼ cup cilantro, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1.5 tablespoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper

Directions:

In a large cast iron skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute and then add ground turkey. Use a wooden spoon to break apart meat and continue cooking approximately 8 minutes until browned.

Add cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. Stir well to incorporate.

Add onion and bell pepper, and cook for 3-4 minutes.

Add diced sweet potato and water. Stir and cover with a lid for approximately 6-8 minutes until the sweet potatoes soften. Add additional water during this process if needed to keep the meat from drying out.

Remove lid and add additional salt and pepper if needed. Top with shredded mozzarella and allow it to melt. Remove skillet from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

OMG this was easy to whip up and very tasty. I’m always looking for a recipe that excludes, white potatoes, corn, wheat, peas, I guess you’ve figured out I have numerous allergies. Thanks for sharing

Easy to make but I didn’t think it was flavorful enough. Added a few tablespoon of Mezzetta’s Gardiniera. Just what it needed.

This was DELICIOUS!! Made it for dinner tonight, served it with a side of blackbeans (which I topped with salsa and sour cream). Really easy, though it took longer than 30 minutes, once you add prep time (or maybe I’m just slow lol). Only thing I changed was a green bell pepper for yellow, and didn’t add the cilantro- just using what I had in the fridge. Anyway, definitely a keeper, will be making this again!

  4. I made this dish, cumin was the secret ingredient that makes it so good. I didn’t even expect cumin goes well with mozzarella cheese… yummy…

Followed the recipe exactly and it was AMAZING. I recommend it for anyone who is gluten-free, and for dairy-free just substitute the cheese for a veggie cheese alternative – or omit entirely, it’s still delicious! Definitely keeping this and making again and again.

Not sure where I went wrong but this was really bland. Even my 4 year old told me I didn’t need to make this again. Since there is so much leftover I think I’ll try the burrito idea as someone suggested.

    1. I substituted butternut squash for the potato. I used red onion and lots of garlic and cayenne pepper. I did not have cumin or cilantro and I did not put cheese on it and it was still delicious!! Love the ground turkey. Some people commented that it was bland, so I would recommend more garlic than it calls for and the cayenne to give it zip! I have made it twice and will make it many times again in the future.

  7. This was absolutely delicious and very flavorful! I used a red bell pepper and white cheddar instead. The sweet potatoes also needed longer to cook, but worth the wait!

We love this recipe! I add black beans and sometimes a can of rotel lime and cilantro. Its a hit! I wish I had nutritional value for it though.

We had a long day of shopping and two cranky kids and between my husband an I we made this dish it was easy and delishious!!! I added 2 cups of coliflower rice plus paprika just so i had leftovers and turned out great..thank u so much i had 3 servings !!!! Yummmuuyu

  10. I am not a confident cook, but this turned out great! I forgot the yellow pepper, so I added diced tomatoes instead. Also, my partner accidentally grabbed yams instead of sweet potatoes, but they turned out just fine, too. We had it with rice and after one serving from me and two servings from him, we still have left overs. Definitely making it again.

This recipe was delicious! Thank you so much for sharing. I did precook the sweet potatoes, only because I like them really soft. I cut them up as indicated and precooked them right in the same skillet with a little coconut oil and cinnamon. I put them to the side and added them as indicated on the recipe.
    Definitely a two thumbs up.

It has good flavor. I substituted diced turkey breast for the ground turkey. Sauteed the seasoned turkey with the garlic, then removed from pan. So that it doesn’t get rubbery. Followed the rest of the recipe. Added Italian cheese mix instead of just mozz. Deelicious.

Just made this, turned out great. Very good and had lots of flavor. Made without cheese and I didn’t think it was missing anything. Thanks!

  14. This recipe was amazing. It was very easy to makes It has a wonderful aroma and was delicious. I was glad to bring another dish into my household

Delicious. Thanks to the Cumin, you would swear you were eating sausage. I think you need the yellow pepper for sweetness.

I tried your recipe today and it was very tasty! My husband loved it. He recently found out that he is allergic to gluten and dairy. So I have been trying to find recipes that are gluten free. I am so glad I found your recipe on Pinterest! The only modification that I made to this recipe was use non-dairy mozzarella cheese. Thanks again!

  17. This was delicious and super easy to make. Would you happen to know the nutritional info for this dish? Thank you so much!!

  18. This recipe was delicious! I will be adding this to my recipe collection. The only things I will do different next time will be to cook the sweet potatoes first, set aside and then do the onions before adding the garlic and then the ground turkey to cook. The cilantro and cumin adds great flavor!

  19. This is actually so delicious! I’m calorie counting right now so I thought I would leave what I configured. I made it exactly as the recipe says and 1/4th of the dinner is about 304 calories.

  20. I made this last night for my boyfriend and I! It came out way better than expected! Thought I was going to have trouble because I made it in a sauce pan with no lid for the sweet potatoes to soften. But it turned out great! Defintely going to make this again soon!

This is easy to make and filling. I left out the yellow pepper since I am allergic to nightshades. I am also allergic to dairy, so I used a non-dairy mazzarella cheese. I added more salt, pepper, and garlic.. It was a very savory flavor. It is difficult to find grain free, dairy free, nightshade, and soy free recipes. Thank you for a great recipe. This recipe is easy to adjust the flavor by adding more spices.

This meal was very good and really easy. I left out the cilantro. Next time I might add black beans. Although it was good the way it was made. 👍👍

This is everything I look for in a recipe-quick, easy, healthy and DELICIOUS!! We enjoyed seconds and thirds of this and this recipe will now be in our weekly rotation. I did throw the sweet potatoes in the oven when I started with the garlic and turkey– just to soften them up a bit, but otherwise I followed the recipe and will continue to make this dish. Thank you!!

  24. 5 stars
I’ve made this 3 times in the last month and family loves it. Awesome recipe and I made no changes except to add additional vegetables in and extra sweet potatoes.

  25. 5 stars
Wow! This was really good! I followed the recipe exactly except instead of water I used chicken broth! I normally don’t like Cumin a lot but in this recipe it worked perfectly! It came out quite tasty!

  26. Very very delicious!! I absolutely will make this again and again. My husband and son loved it. And my son isn’t a fan of sweet potatoes. I add 1 tablespoon of cumin rather 1.5 because I didn’t want it too spicy. It was perfect for us. Thank you !!

  27. Made with turkey Italian sausage and half butternut squash half sweet potato (which I roasted in the oven first). Also added a tiny bit of chicken stock to make sure the veggies all cooked soft as my Hubbie hates crunchy veggies. So delish!

I was skeptical about how well my kids would eat this, but based off the good ratings and healthy ingredients, I gave it a shot. It was so good and all 4 of my kids ate it, my ultra-picky eater even (grudgingly) ate it!! Win in our house! Will definitely be making it again. Added lots of mozzarella and cilantro on top and it was perfect! They requested more meat in it next time, so I might try 1.5 lbs of turkey and 3 whole sweet potatoes next time I make it.

  29. Sooo yummmy! I thought I had a yellow pepper at home but didn’t so I used a jalepeño and it was super good. It really didn’t make it too spicy either. Thanks for the recipe!

  30. Great recipe for a healthy week night dinner. The photos show yams, not sweet potatoes which I would definitely substitute next time I make it. I also added more spice in a sirracha finish. Overall happy but I might also add some black beans.

  31. I thought this could have used more spice. It was fine, and cooled according to instructions, but could have had a lot more flavor, I also wonder why no one who had posted a question has gotten an answer,

  32. Just made this with a few slight modifications- Japanese white sweet potato and garlic salt/pepper pepper bateau of regular and it came out fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe 😉

Made this dish tonight and love it! I used ground chicken and used chicken broth plus the added water while the sweet potatoes were cooking. Also reduced the chili powder to 1/2 teaspoon only because all I had on hand was hot Mexican chili powder and was concerned my 86 year old Mom would think it was too spicy! Will definitely make it again and will likely make a side of black beans as some others have done.

  34. 5 stars
Great Recipe! Made it for the first time tonight and had no issues, extremely easy to follow. My boyfriend and I loved it! Will definitely be sharing this recipe with others, and making again in the future.

  35. Made this according to recipe and needs something more. Was looking for something healthy and quick. However, even with the cheese, the items did not combine. I would take a bite and it would be all burger or just sweet potato. Won’t do this one again.

  36. 5 stars
This is my second time making this. I used chicken stock instead of water and added black beans, and since I HATE cilantro I omitted it. Everybody loved it. I garnished it with some plain Greek yogurt and hot sauce, it was way better than expected. Great recipe(:

  37. 5 stars
This was so simple to make and so full of flavor!! I was even able to trick my family into thinking they were eating hamburger & I especially loved the sweet potatoes in this…it’s the first time I have ever put them in a dish and actually liked it!!!

  38. So good! But instead of the spices suggested, I used Slap Ya Mama because I like Cajun spices with sweet potatoes. Will definitely make this again

  39. This was delish! I added a little bit of curry, a can of rotel, and a can of corn to get some more veggies in. I’ll definitely make again!

  40. Quick way to cook sweet potatoes. 😍Love it. Cooked it for supper after work. Family love it, especially with cheese. I add ketchup for species. My husband likes hot sauce. Thanxs a lot for sharing😋

  41. I don’t have a cast iron skillet but a regular one works just as well. So simple, so tasty, the right blend of seasonings. Yum! Thanks for sharing.😊

This was the most bland dish I’ve ever made. We added extra seasoning like adobo and old Bay, at one point even putting Tika masala in this dish but there was no saving it. We ended up feeding some of it to our dog bc we couldn’t eat it. I tried this recipe for something quick and healthy but in my honest opinion I wouldn’t bother with this. I thought the cheese would redeem this but no. And the stuff didn’t seem to mix well. Would not recommend, would not try again.

  43. 5 stars
Excellent recipe!!! Kids had it as is and husband and I added sriracha sauce for extra heat. Definitely will make again. Super easy to make and easy to adjust to what we have on hand.

  44. 5 stars
This was really good and easy to make. I used red pepper and Japanese sweet potato and it was phenomenal. Make it even faster by microwaving the sweet potatoes and just tossing in for a few minutes at the end. Yum!

  45. 5 stars
This is really good! I have a dairy allergy, so we used no cheese. And we scaled back the chili powder and cumin because we have young kids who don’t like spicy anything. And still, it came out great and I’ll be making it again soon.

  46. 4 stars
I used ground beef with white potatoes and fresh corn off the cob. I boiled the white potatoes first. Otherwise the meat would have gotten very dry by the time the potatoes would really cook. Taste really good. Thank you.

  47. 4 stars
I made this today for work lunches this week. I used ground chicken, chicken broth, can of corn, and added a jalapeño from my garden. I like spicy and this definitely hit the mark!

  48. 5 stars
Wow. This was truly yummy. Cumin really worked well in the turkey and the cilantro on top really added nice flavour. I did microwave the sweet potatoes for 3 minutes and then followed the recipe (well…I did cook the onion first a bit before adding the turkey). Other than that, no changes. Whole family enjoyed it – which is saying a lot!! Thank you!

  49. Good morning..
would it be possible to get the nutritional value of this recipe please!!!
I am on weight watchers and it’s all about points :)
    LOOKS DELICIOUS!!!!

This was absolutely delicious! I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did! I was worried the sweet potatoes wouldn’t be cooked in time, but they were perfect! Great recipe!

  51. Always a family favorite in our house! Would you be able to provide the nutritional information for this meal? Thanks for a wonderful recipe!
