Tips for the Making the Best Petit Fours from Box Mix

  • Make sure NOT to over-mix the batter if you want light, fluffy cakes.
  • Use ingredients that are at room temperature.
  • Do not swap butter for oil, butter tends to result in a dry cake.
  • Do NOT open the oven door while baking.
  • Don’t overfill your pans.
  • Allow your cakes to completely cool before frosting.

How to Store Petit Fours

Petit fours should be stored in an airtight container. They will keep at room temperature for two days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. They may also be frozen for up to three months.

If you choose to freeze the petit fours you should flash freeze them in a sheet pan, then wrap individually in plastic wrap before storing in an airtight container.

When ready to serve, thaw at room temperature for a few hours.

About the Ingredients for Easy Petit Fours!

Box Mix – A box of french vanilla cake mix is best but you can use any flavour you like.

Eggs – Use room temperature eggs.

Oil – A neutral flavoured oil works here to keep the little cakes moist.

Milk – Whole milk will give the best results, but you can use any milk you like. Use room temperature milk so the batter comes together better.

Food colouring – Use gel food colouring so you can get the colours you want without watering down the texture.

Frosting – Pre-made frosting melts easily and smoothly to create a nice thick glaze over the petits fours.

Sprinkles – You will need to find unicorn horn sprinkles for these petit fours. I used Wilton unicorn horn sprinkles.

½ Cup canola oil
1 Cup whole milk
Pink, Sky Blue, Black and Purple gel food coloring
2 container of vanilla frosting
