Tips for Best Results
- Don’t overmix the batter. Mix just until combined for light, fluffy cupcakes.
- Use room temperature ingredients. Butter, eggs, and milk blend more smoothly.
- Fill liners evenly. About 2/3 full helps them bake evenly without overflowing.
- Cool completely before frosting. Warm cupcakes will melt the buttercream.
- Use gel food colouring. It gives brighter red and blue tones without thinning the frosting.
- Pipe frosting fully cooled. This helps the decorative “firework” look hold its shape.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- All-purpose flour gives structure to the cupcakes.
- Baking powder helps them rise and stay light.
- Salt balances sweetness.
- Butter adds richness in both cupcakes and frosting.
- Granulated sugar sweetens and helps create a soft crumb.
- Eggs provide structure and moisture.
- Milk keeps the batter smooth and tender. Milk can be replaced with a dairy-free alternative.
- Vanilla extract adds classic flavour throughout.
- Powdered sugar creates a smooth, pipeable buttercream.
- Red and blue gel colouring creates the festive firework effect.
- Twizzlers (or similar candy strings) create the “firecracker” centre.

Storage
- Freezer (Frosted): Can be frozen, but best results come from freezing unfrosted cupcakes and decorating fresh.
- Room Temperature: Store unfrosted cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 2 days in a cool, dry place.
- Refrigerator: Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Bring to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
- Freezer (Unfrosted): Freeze cupcakes for up to 2 months. Wrap individually and store in a freezer-safe container. Thaw at room temperature before decorating.
