Tips for the Best Box Mix Cupcakes
Box mixes are easy to use, but you should be aware of some cupcake baking basics to make the most out of them!
- Make sure NOT to over-mix the batter if you want light, fluffy cupcakes.
- Use ingredients that are at room temperature.
- Do NOT open the oven door while baking.
- Always fill your cupcake liners about 2/3 full.
- Allow your cupcakes to completely cool before frosting.
How to Store Whiskey Cupcakes
These cupcakes should last up to 4 days at room temperature stored in an airtight container. Avoid storing in the fridge unless it is warm enough inside that the buttercream might melt. They can last in the fridge for up to 5 days, but they will start to dry out quickly.
You can also freeze your cupcakes (frosted or unfrosted) for up to 3 months before defrosting at room temperature and eating.
About the Equipment Needed to Make These Whiskey Cupcakes
- Patriotic cupcake liners – I used this patriotic cupcake decorating kit which includes a variety of cupcake liners as well as silver star cupcake toppers.
- Cupcake/muffin pan – Any standard cupcake pan will do.
- Medium cookie scoop – I find a cookie scoop is the easiest way to fill up a muffin pan.
- Silver star cupcake topper – I used the ones in the cupcake kit mentioned above, but any silver star topper will do. These cupcake toppers are pretty cute and fairly inexpensive.
- American Flag cupcake topper
- 1 large piping bag – I like to use a reusable piping bag to decorate with but you can use disposable ones instead.
- Star tip – Use a 1M piping tip.
- Mini pipettes – Use disposable pipettes or mini flavour injectors.
About the Ingredients for American Honey Whiskey Cupcakes
Cake Mix – French vanilla cake mix is best, you can also use your favourite vanilla cupcake recipe.
Eggs – Always bake with room temperature eggs for the best results.
Butter – Butter will give the cupcakes a load of flavour. I generally prefer cupcakes made with oil as it results in a more moist cake, but since we are soaking these in Whiskey that isn’t a concern here. For dairy free or vegan, you can use oil instead.
Milk – Any kind of milk will do here.
Whiskey – I used Wild Turkey American Honey Whiskey, which is a liqueur blended with real honey & Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Feel free to substitute with similar if needed.
Sugar – You will need powdered sugar for making the frosting.
Vanilla extract – Pure vanilla extract is best but you can substitute with artificial if needed.
Sprinkles – You can use any type of patriotic sprinkles here, these Red, White, and Blue Jimmies are perfect here.
