Best Method to Char Grapefruit
If you want to get that perfect char on your grapefruit for this recipe (or any other recipe!), here is the method that I find works best.
Preheat your oven to broil on high. Line a baking sheet with foil then place grapefruit halves on the baking sheet, sliced sides up. Broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the grapefruit slices are slightly charred. You will need to keep your eye on them as it can happen quickly. Remove from oven and let cool.
You could also throw your grapefruit halves on the grill, cut sides down, for a minute or two if you are making these mocktails outdoors.
Tips for Making the BEST Mojitos
- Chill your glasses ahead of time to help ensure the cocktail remains cool to the very last sip.
- Choose premium liquors for the best results. You don’t need to reach for the top shelf but at least avoid scraping the bottom of the barrel.
- Fresh squeezed juice goes a long way with cocktails.
- To make sure your cocktail is properly chilled, consider using larger ice cubes. They melt slower and won’t water down your drink as quickly.
- Blending everything together is a good shortcut, for a more classic appearance follow the given recipe. Muddling is a technique used to gently mash herbs or fruit to release their juices. You can do this with the bottom of a wooden spoon or with a proper muddler.
- Make sure you strain the cocktail for a more smooth mouthfeel.
How to Make a Grapefruit Mojito Mocktail
If you are serving someone who prefers an alcohol-free drink, this grapefruit mojito mocktail is the perfect choice. The grapefruit juice and mint give it a refreshing flavor, while the sparkling water makes it bubbly and fun.
To make it a mocktail, simply replace the rum with additional club soda and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.
This is a great way to adjust the recipe for kids to enjoy too!
Equipment Needed to Make a Mojito
- Lowball glassses (These 12 oz cocktail glasses are similar to what I used)
- Straws (I like to use stainless steel straws like these)
If using blender method:
- A blender (I like to use my blendtec blender for most jobs, but for blending without ice I’ll usually grab my portable blender.)
If muddling:
About the Ingredients for a Smoky Brown Sugar Grapefruit Mojito
Citrus – We are using a combination of fresh grapefruit and fresh lime. Do not substitute with juice, we char the fruit to get a smoky flavoured juice that you just can’t reproduce with bottled juice.
Brown sugar – The brown sugar not only sweetens mojito but also brings a lot of depth. Dark brown sugar works better here than light or golden.
Mint – Any type of fresh mint will work here, whatever you have on hand is fine.
Rum – Use a good quality white rum, do not substitute with any other kind of rum. A clear rum is a must for mojitos.
Club soda – You can use nearly any clear carbonated unflavoured or citrus soda. Club soda or soda water are the best choices, but sprite works too!
