Tips for Making the BEST Layered Cocktails

  • Understanding the density of the liquids you are using is key to making a layered drink. The liquid with the highest sugar content will sink to the bottom.
  • Since you are following a recipe, be sure to not to make any significant substitutions as it will affect your layers.
  • Pour in the ingredients in the indicated order only.
  • Use a clear glass so that you can see the layers.
  • Chill your glasses ahead of time to help ensure the cocktail remains cool to the very last sip.
  • Use a long spoon or bar-spoon to slowly layer the liquids, being careful not to mix them.
  • Be precise when measuring the ingredients so that your layers are even.
  • Choose premium liquors for the best results. You don’t need to reach for the top shelf but at least avoid scraping the bottom of the barrel.
  • Fresh squeezed juice goes a long way with cocktails.
  • To make sure your cocktail is properly chilled, consider using larger ice cubes. They melt slower and won’t water down your drink as quickly.

About the Ingredients for a Rainbow Cocktail

Grenadine – Grenadine syrup is a cocktail mixer made from fresh pomegranate juice reduced with sugar, you can easily find it in grocery stores. While normally you can substitute with pomegranate juice or even cranberry juice I would not do that here as it can change the effect we are going for. Raspberry syrup could be an OK substitute, but please note that I have not tried it myself.

Tropical rum – Malibu Coconut Rum is your best bet but any tropical flavoured rum will do. Another decent pick is Bacardi Tropical Rum. Substitute with coconut water if making a mocktail.

Pineapple juice – You definitely want a 100% pineapple juice and not a cocktail or drink.

Blue curacao – Make sure you use Blue Curaçao liqueur and not the syrup unless you are making a mocktail.

Spiced rum – Use your favourite spiced rum here. I typically use either Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum or Kraken Black Spiced Rum.

Grape juice – I used Welch’s Grape Juice, you can use any other you like but make sure it is 100% grape juice for the best flavour.

Fruit punch – Use your favourite red fruit punch.

Orange juice – Use your favourite orange juice, or freshly squeeze your own.
