I really love German cooking, it’s the epitome of comfort food for me. Everything is so hearty and full of wonderful flavour. This Slow Cooker Beef Roast is my take on Sauerbraten, and is far from authentic but still has yummy flavour that your whole family will love!
Ingredients:
1 medium onion, chopped
2 medium carrots, chopped
2 Cloves Garlic
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup German mustard (or Dijon)
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 Beef Bouillon Packets
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 (3 1/2 to 4-pound) beef roast
Directions:
Combine Onion, Carrots and Garlic in Slow Cooker.
Pour in water and vinegar.
Pat the roast dry and rub with bouillon, mustard, pepper and cloves on all sides. Place roast on top of Vegetables in the cooker.Cover and cook on high for 1 hour then turn down to low for 6-7 hours.
Remove the meat and vegetables from the slow cooker and cover with foil to keep warm.
If desired, transfer liquid to a saucepan and mix in approx. 1 tbsp flour over medium heat until thick to make gravy.
Serve roast, vegetables and gravy, with hot cooked spaetzle or oven roasted potatoes.
