What is Sangria?

Sangria is a popular Spanish beverage made with red wine, fruit, and other ingredients such as brandy, triple sec or orange liqueur. Its origins actually go back to about 200 BC in Roman times!

Water in ancient Rome was full of bacteria and required an alcohol to be added in order to make it safe to drink. The Romans called it “hippocras”, often adding sugar and spices to the mix to improve the flavour.

The word “sangria” comes from the Spanish word “sangre,” which means blood, referring to its deep red color.

Sangria has been popular for centuries since then, with different variations appearing throughout Europe and the Americas. It has become an international favourite thanks to its fruity flavor and light, refreshing taste.

While Sangria is traditionally made with red wine, this one uses a white wine for an even lighter and crisp drink.

What Type of Persimmon is Best for Cocktails?

The best type of persimmon for cocktails is usually the Fuyu variety. This type of persimmon has a firm texture and sweet flavor that blend perfectly with most liquors, liqueurs, and mixers. The orange-coloured fruit can be chopped, sliced, or pureed to create a range of flavorful and creative cocktails.

When selecting persimmons for your cocktails, look for fruits that are firm and plump with smooth skin. Avoid any fruit that is soft or mouldy.

While you could use Hachiya instead, this type of persimmon is much softer in texture when ripe which can get off-putting in a Sangria. Hachiya persimmons are best when eaten on their own or cooked in desserts.

Regardless of the type of persimmon you use, they add a unique flavor and texture to cocktails that can’t be replicated with other fruits. If you’re looking for a way to spice up your next party, try infusing fresh Fuyu persimmons into your drinks!

Tips for Making the Best Christmas Sangria

  • When making sangria, it’s important to keep the fruit-to-wine ratio in mind. You don’t want too much sugar from the fruits overpowering the wine. The best way to achieve this is to use less sugar in the recipe and opt for fresher, seasonal fruits.
  • Also consider serving with sparkling water or club soda to the recipe. This will give the sangria a light and refreshing fizz that cuts through the sweetness of the fruit.
  • Be sure to use good quality ingredients where possible – this will make a difference in the overall flavor of your sangria.
  • This Sangria is best served chilled.
  • Prepare ice cubes with cranberries and herbs in them for a truly pretty presentation.
  • Enjoy your Sangria and don’t forget to drink responsibly. Cheers!

What is the Best White Wine for Sangria?

The best white wine for Sangria is a dry and crisp variety, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. These wines have enough acidity to pair well with the sweetness of Fuyu persimmons and other fruits and mixers in the drink.

For a richer, more robust flavor, try using a buttery Chardonnay. The oaky notes and creamy texture are delicious when combined with the other flavors in Sangria.

Whether you use a light or full-bodied white wine, make sure that it has good acidity and isn’t too sweet. It’s best to avoid cheap, sweet wines as they can make your Sangria taste overly sugary.

Finally, don’t forget to chill the white wine before adding it to your Sangria. This will help keep the drink from becoming too warm and make it more refreshing.

  • Naval oranges
  • Pomegranate Arils
  • Blackberries
  • Green grapes
  • Grapefruit
  • Apples

How to Make Ahead and Store Sangria

To ensure that the fruit infuses with wine it is important to allow the sangria to rest at least a few hours ahead of serving. This ensures a sweeter and fruitier drink.

This easy-to-make sangria recipe can be prepped ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours ahead of serving. It should be consumed within 3 days of preparation, and stored in the refrigerator. I do find it best if enjoyed within 2 days though.

You can also prepare the persimmon syrup ahead of time and store it in a sealable container in the fridge for up to four days.

It’s a great choice for parties, since it can be made in advance and left to chill until the big event.

About the Ingredients for Persimmon White Wine Sangria

Persimmons – Use Fuyu Persimmons, they are firmer with a better texture for a sangria than other varieties. Plus they are still pretty sweet even if they aren’t fully ripe where other varieties can be quite astringent if not perfectly ripe.

Cranberries – Adds colour more than flavour and totally optional. You might use a red apple in its place.

Liqueur – Grand Marnier is a good choice here but you could opt for any orange flavoured liqueur or in a pinch some good brandy.

Wine – Look for a dry white wine that is fruity and crisp. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, or Grenache Blanc are all good choices. I went with Toro Bravo Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo is a grape variety grown only in Spain and is well suited for Sangria.

Spices – Make sure you use only whole spices.
