Can I Make This Board Ahead of Time?
No, unless you have space in your refrigerator for the board as the cream cheese frosting must be chilled. The frosting should only be left at room temperature for up to two hours.
I would discard any remaining after this point for safety’s sake.
Equipment Needed for a Frosting Board
Electric mixer – A hand mixer or stand mixer will make whipping up the frosting a lot easier!
Large piping bag and decorative tip of your choice.
Serving board – To create the perfect frosting board, opt for a spacious surface like a large charcuterie board, a marble slab, or a wooden board or tray. It’s important to make sure that the selected board is food-grade and perfectly clean. Also skip any board that has been used to prepare raw meat.
No need to worry if you don’t have a big board. Just put the frosting on a smaller one and serve it with small dishes of dippers.
Parchment paper – I would recommend lining your serving board with parchment paper to protect from any staining. The oils from the frosting could seep into a wooden or marble board and stain it.
About the Ingredients for the Orange Frosting
Butter – You can substitute with salted butter, if you do that you will want to salt the frosting only to taste.
Cream cheese – Regular cream cheese is best. Do not use whipped or cream cheese spread. You can use light cream cheese if you like, but let’s be honest we aren’t trying to be healthy with this treat!
Vanilla extract – Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavour, but artificial vanilla extract is just fine.
Salt – Reduce the amount used if you choose to use salted butter.
Powdered sugar – Powdered sugar or confectioners sugar will work.
Food colouring – Only use gel food colouring for the best colour, just don’t go overboard with it or the frosting may taste bitter.
You could also use buttercream instead of this cream cheese frosting.
Dippers for a Halloween Frosting Board
You want to include a variety of foods to dip in your buttercream. You will want to provide a spreader for scooping up frosting for softer items. A mixture of sweet and salty dippers provide the perfect variety!
- Graham crackers
- Donuts
- Cookies – Pirouette cookies, Madeleines, Nilla wafers, Oreos etc…
- Pretzels and Chocolate coated pretzels
- Apple slices
- Rice Krispie treats
- Mini cupcakes (unfrosted)
We also included some candy with the board.
- Brown mini M&Ms
- Green mini M&Ms
- Reeses Pieces candy
- Halloween candy or mini candy bars
