These Caramel Apple Cupcakes are a sweet and spiced autumn treat, topped with creamy frosting and drizzled with caramel.

These Caramel Apple Cupcakes are a delicious taste of autumn in every bite. Packed with tender, spiced apple pieces and topped with light, fluffy frosting and a drizzle of rich caramel, they’re perfect for fall gatherings, holiday parties, or any time you want a cozy, homemade dessert.

Easy to make and full of seasonal flavour, these cupcakes are sure to become a favourite with family and friends.

  • Fresh apples add real flavour and moisture – The chopped tart apples keep the cupcakes soft while adding texture and natural sweetness.
  • Spice cake mix keeps it simple – You get warm fall spices and consistent results without complicated steps.
  • Apple cider frosting enhances the flavour – The cider and cinnamon bring extra depth and a subtle tang that pairs perfectly with the apples.
  • Caramel drizzle ties it all together – Rich, buttery caramel adds the perfect finishing touch.
  • Perfect balance of sweet and spiced – Cozy autumn flavour without being overly heavy or sugary.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use tart apples – Granny Smith or other tart varieties balance the sweetness and hold their texture during baking.
  • Chop apples finely – Small, even pieces distribute better through the batter and prevent sinking.
  • Don’t overmix the batter – Stir just until combined to keep the cupcakes light and tender.
  • Cool completely before frosting – Any warmth will melt the frosting and affect the texture.
  • Adjust frosting consistency if needed – Add a splash more cider to thin it or a little extra powdered sugar to thicken.
  • Drizzle caramel just before serving – This keeps the topping neat and prevents it from soaking into the frosting.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Spice cake mix – A boxed spice cake mix keeps this recipe quick and easy. You can substitute yellow cake mix plus 1–2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon if needed.
  • Tart apples – Granny Smith or other firm, tart apples work best. You can use Honeycrisp or Fuji for a sweeter flavour, but avoid very soft varieties.
  • Eggs, oil, and water – Use the ingredients listed on your cake mix box. You can substitute melted butter for oil for a slightly richer flavour.
  • Confectioners’ sugar – Also called powdered sugar. There isn’t a good substitute here, as it creates the smooth frosting texture.
  • Butter – Use unsalted butter, softened. Salted butter can be used; just omit the pinch of salt in the frosting.
  • Apple cider – Adds real apple flavour to the frosting. Apple juice works as a substitute, though the flavour will be slightly milder.
  • Ground cinnamon – Enhances the warm spice flavour. You can substitute apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice.
  • Caramel sauce – Store-bought or homemade both work well. Salted caramel is a delicious option for added depth.
