How Much Alcohol is in These Jello Shots?

We are using three different types of alcohol in these Guinness beer jello shots, but they don’t actually contain a lot of alcohol.

The largest amount of alcohol comes from the 5.6% ABV stout, and we are using almost as much water as alcohol. This leaves the jello shots pretty tame. With the proportions we used, the Jello shots end up with about 9-10% ABV.

Can You Get Drunk Off Jello Shots?

Yes, they are made with alcohol! Although the alcohol content isn’t a lot, they are so fun and easy to eat, the alcohol can really sneak up on you.

This recipe is intended only for responsible adults of legal drinking age. It is purely intended for entertainment purposes.

Please enjoy these responsibly and with moderation.

How Long does it Take for Gelatin Shots to Set?

Assuming you use the proportions given in the recipe, it takes anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours to set up all the way. This of course also depends on the size of container you use used.

Be sure to keep them in the fridge until set, and ready to serve. If they do not set up it is likely that you used too much vodka or liquid in general. Make sure you measure carefully!

How to Serve Guinness Jello Shots

We chose to use shot glasses instead of jello shot cups here because they looked like mini pint glasses, which gives these jello shots a cute “beer like” aesthetic.

As with any jello shot, you can serve these in a variety of ways:

  • Disposable plastic shot cups.
  • Shot glasses. You will need to provide miniature spoons.
  • Muffin tins lined with silicone liners or cupcake wrappers.
  • As a sheet: Pour the gelatin layers into a baking sheet and cut them into small squares once set.

Tips for the Best Guinness Jello Shots

  • Place your shot glasses on a sheet pan before filling them to make placing them in the refrigerator easier.
  • When using the injector, you will probably suck up a little bit of the liquid underneath the foam, but that’s ok, as long as the top of the shot is foamy, you’re good to go.
  • If the shot comes out stiffer than normal, not enough liquid was used.
  • If the shot won’t set up, it means too much vodka was used.
  • It will take about 3 minutes or so of mixing to get a nice foam going. This makes the shot look like a freshly poured glass of beer. If desired, you can skip this top layer. Although I would replace half a cup of Guinness with Kahlua for the bottom layer, if you do.
  • If you want the bottom to be a bit sweeter, you can replace a portion of the Guinness with Kahlua. It’s up to you for how much is swapped, although I would start with half a cup.
  • If you want more of a bite to your shot, you can replace half a cup of Guinness in the bottom layer for half a cup of the whipped cream vodka. This will make the shot a lot stronger.
  • Do not replace the water with alcohol, if you put too much alcohol into your Jello Shot then it won’t set.

Make Ahead & Storage Instructions

Jello shots store well in the fridge for up to a week, they are safe to consume for about 2 weeks but the gelatin does start to break down after a week, which can give the shots a weird consistency.

If you are making these jello shots ahead of time or taking them to a party, be sure to buy shot cups with lids and store in the fridge until serving. If you using glass shot glasses be sure to cover each with plastic wrap pressed down to the surface of the shot to prevent the shots from getting a hard “skin”.

You should plan to consume the shots within 30 – 45 minutes of removing from the refrigerator.

Can you Freeze Jello Shots?

Avoid freezing your jello shots. They won’t set up faster, they will just get icy, and the frosty texture is probably not what you are going for with these particular shots. Just stick to the refrigerator.

Kitchen Tools Every Home Cook Needs

About the Equipment Needed to Make Jello Shots

20 2-Ounce Shot Glasses – As mentioned above, you can also use jello shot cups or just a sheet pan.

Electric mixer – A hand mixer or stand mixer are probably the easiest ways to make the foam, but you can also use a whisk and a lot of elbow grease.

Injector – You can spoon the foam onto the jello shots, if desired, but the injector makes it quick and painless.

Turkey Baster – It is a lot easy and less messy to fill the shot glasses with the guinness flavoured gelatin using a turkey baster. These are pretty inexpensive and can be found at most grocery stores.

Ingredients for Guinness jello shots - packets of knox gelatin, guinness extra stout bottle, Burnett's whipped cream vodka, and Kahlua.

About the Ingredients for Guinness Jell-O Shots

Gelatin – I know, they are called jello shots, but made with plain gelatin. Using plain gelatin gives us complete control over the flavour of the jell-o shots. I always use knox unflavoured gelatin, but any brand of unflavoured gelatin will work, you just may need to measure the amount though if the packets of gelatin are not the same size.

Water – The water doesn’t need to be boiling, but it does need to be hot enough to dissolve the gelatin. To be on the safe side, just use boiling water.

Guinness – You will want to use Guinness Extra Stout here, but you can replace with your favourite stout. The hoppier it is, the better. The strong flavour of hops from the Guinness Extra Stout is what makes these jello shots so great.

Kalhua – You might be wondering why Kalhua and not Bailey’s irish cream or another Irish cream liqueur. While Bailey’s is an obvious choice, I felt the Kalhua gave a better finished flavour. Feel free to use either, or any other coffee liqueur.

Vodka – If you can’t find whipped cream vodka then feel free to substitute with another similar flavoured vodka or just use unflavoured vokda. Vanilla vodka would be a good substitute.

Note For authentic Irish car bomb jello shots made with irish alcohol, you can substitute Bailey’s and Jameson Irish whiskey for the Kalhua and Vodka, but for mini Guinness jello shots that taste like a pint of Guinness, just stick with me here.
