The Shirley Temple is a timeless, non-alcoholic drink that’s beloved by both kids and adults alike.

This delightful beverage combines the fizzy sweetness of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda with the vibrant red hue and flavour of grenadine. Traditionally garnished with a maraschino cherry, it adds a touch of elegance and fun to any gathering.

Perfect for parties, family get-togethers, or simply as a refreshing treat on a warm day, the Shirley Temple is a charming drink that brings a sense of nostalgia and joy to every sip.

Kitchen Tools Every Home Cook Needs

Equipment Needed

You don’t need any equipment at all to make this classic mocktail.

I would recommend using a 16 oz Highball glass or a 500 mL mason jar for serving. Any tall glass will work as long as it can hold about 16 oz.

You will also want picks for the garnishes. I used these gold cocktail picks for my garnish, but you might want to use plastic sword picks or even tropical umbrella picks when serving kids.

About the Ingredients for a Classic Shirley Temple

Note: Your orange juice and soda should be chilled prior to making this delicious virgin drink.

Orange juice – I like to use pulp-free orange juice, do not substitute with orange drinks as it will be too sweet.

Soda – We used 7-up but sprite is a good option. An authentic Shirley Temple is made with ginger ale instead but citrus pop works better in my opinion.

Grenadine – Grenadine syrup is made from pomegranate and has a brilliant red colour. If you need a good substitute then maraschino cherry juice is your best bet. You can easily adjust the sweetness of the drink by adjusting the amount of grenadine you add.

Garnishes – Garnish as desired. Citrus slices, maraschino cherries, and umbrellas on top of the drink are a fun way to fancy it up!
