How to Heat Treat Cake Mix

Since we are using cake mix to flavour the cheeseball, it is important that you heat treat the cake mix before use. This process will kill any bacteria in the cake mix and make it safe to eat.

To heat treat your cake mix you can use either the oven method or the microwave. For the oven method, preheat your oven to 350°F and spread out the cake mix on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, stirring halfway through. Check that the cake mix has reached a temperature of 165°F or higher. Heat again in 2 minute increments as needed, stirring between each. Allow the cake mix to cool before using it in the cheeseball.

For the microwave method, add 1 cup of cake mix into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave it on high for 30 seconds. Stir, and then microwave again in 30-second increments until the cake mix reaches a temperature of 165°F or higher. Once heated, allow to cool before using it in the cheeseball.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy your Bunny Butt Cheese Ball Platter safely!

How to Store This Easter Bunny Cheeseball

Once you have made this Bunny Butt Cheese Ball Platter for your Easter feast, you’ll need to store it properly. To store the cheese ball, cover completely with plastic wrap. Make sure to press down around the edges of the cheese ball so that there are no air pockets left uncovered. Your cheese ball should be good in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

When you are ready to serve, simply bring it out, let it come to room temperature, and remove the plastic wrap just before serving.

About the Ingredients for the Bunny Butt Cheeseball

Cream cheese – Use full fat cream cheese for best results. You can use light cream cheese if you like. Make sure that your cream cheese is room temperature and soft enough to work with.

Sprinkles – Use any sprinkles you have on hand. I used a mix of different sprinkles, and it worked really well. Confetti sprinkles are a great choice.

Chocolate chips – You will want to use white chocolate chips, or you can chop white chocolate.

Cake mix – You will want to use strawberry cake mix for a pink bunny butt, but you can use vanilla cake mix, or Funfetti cake mix instead. Another option is to use vanilla cake mix and stir in strawberry jello powder or freeze dried strawberry powder. You absolutely need to heat treat your cake mix for safety.

Vanilla extract – Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavour, but artificial extract is just fine.

Sugar – A little white sugar sweetens up the cream cheese mixture just a touch.

Shredded coconut – The coconut is for coating the bunny butt like fur. You can use sweetened or unsweetened coconut flakes according to your own preference. You can substitute with white chocolate shavings if you like.

M&M’s – I used pink peanut M&Ms for the pad of the bunny feet, and pink milk chocolate M&Ms for the toes.
