Tips for the Best Whoopie Pies

  • Make sure NOT to over-mix the batter if you want light, fluffy whoopie pies (we do!).
  • Spoon and carefully level your flour, do not pack the flour or eyeball it.
  • Use ingredients that are at room temperature.
  • Do NOT open the oven door while baking.
  • Don’t over-fill your woopie pie pan.
  • Allow your whoopie pies to completely cool before frosting.
  • Store in a single layer if possible.

Alternate Ways to Decorate Burger Whoopie Pies

You can definitely change up the way these whoopie pies are decorated if you don’t want to use so much frosting. Try these ideas instead!

  • Use fresh sliced strawberries instead of red frosting.
  • Use coconut chips mixed with green food die instead of using green frosting.
  • Use Yellow fondant cut into squares for the “cheese”.

How to Store Whoopie Pies

Always make sure your whoopie pies are fully cooled before you put them into an airtight container. Room temperature is the best place to store them, since it’s cool but not cold. A root cellar would be a perfect place for this! They store well at room temperature for up to a week.

If you want the pies to stay fresh for more than a couple of days, put them in an airtight freezer safe container and freeze them for up to 3 months. Let them thaw on the counter a few hours ahead of time when you’re ready to eat them!

Whether you store at room temperature or freeze them, place the whoopie pies in layers separated by parchment paper or waxed paper in an airtight container. Whoopie pies can stick together so this is the best way to store them in tact.

Kitchen Tools Every Home Cook Needs

About the Equipment Needed to Make Whoopie Pie Burgers

  • Stand Mixer – An electric mixer makes it a lot easier to make fluffy, smooth frosting.
  • Whoopie Pie Pan – You could also use a muffin top pan or a plain baking sheet but the “buns” won’t be as uniform.
  • 4 Piping bags – You can use disposable bags or if you have 4 reusable pastry bags, that works.
  • Large star piping tip (1M)
  • Leaf piping tip – I used #352 but any medium or large leaf tip is fine.

About the Ingredients for Cheeseburger Whoopie Pies

Cake Mix – Yellow cake mix will give you more realistic looking buns, but vanilla or lemon cake works too.

Sesame Seeds – I can’t think of any good substitutes, you can leave them off if you like but they really bring the whole thing together.

Eggs – Your eggs should be room temperature.

Butter – Unsalted butter is best but you can definitely use salted butter too if that is what you have on hand.

Milk – Any milk you like is fine, dairy or non-dairy. I usually use whole milk for baking.

Cereal – Chocolate rice krispies. Obviously off brand is fine too.

¼ Cup sesame seeds
3 large eggs
½ Cup unsalted butter, softened
1 Cup milk
3 Cup cocoa rice crispy cereal

For the colored frosting

½ Cup unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ Cup powdered sugar
5 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
Red, Yellow, and Green Gel Food Coloring

For the chocolate frosting

½ C unsalted butter, softened
1 ½ Cup powdered sugar
½ Cup cocoa powder
5 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a whoopie pie pan.

Using a large bowl, beat the cake mix, eggs, butter and milk until combined and smooth.

Spoon about 2 tbsp of cake batter into the whoopie pie pans and bake in the oven for 10-12
minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top of half of the whoopie pies.

Allow to cool before removing from pan.

To make the colored frosting, in the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter until white and creamy, mix in the powdered sugar, then add in the cream until smooth and holds a stiff peak without being too thick.

Separate into three bowls and mix a different color into each bowl until well combined. Add as much food coloring as necessary to reach the right shades. Set aside.

Using a standing mixer, beat all chocolate ingredients, butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder and heavy whipping cream until combined, smooth and hold peaks. Scoop into 1 large piping bag fitted with star tip.

Pairing up the whoopie pies.

Pair the whoopie pies to their size mate. One with sesame seeds, and one without.

Frosting the whoopie pies with chocolate frosting.

Remove the top “bun” and using the chocolate frosting, pipe a ring around the bottom of the whoopie pie.

Coating the chocolate frosting with chocolate rice krispies.

Pour the chocolate rice krispies into a bowl and carefully coat the chocolate frosting.

Using yellow frosting to create "mustard".

Squeeze the yellow frosting into another piping bag and cut the tip off. Squeeze and smooth the yellow frosting onto the chocolate mound. This is your cheese topping.

Piping red frosting over the top to make ketchup.

Squeeze the red frosting into another piping bag and cut the tip off and pipe a thick ring of red frosting around to create the ketchup.

Then piping green leaves with frosting over everything.

Squeeze the green frosting into the piping bag fitted with a leaf tip. Pipe leafs all over the top of the ‘ketchup’ to create a lettuce look.

Carefully place the top whoopie pie on top and gently press down.

Enjoy!
